{"id":78,"date":"2006-02-09T07:51:13","date_gmt":"2006-02-09T13:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ericgharrison.wordpress.com\/2006\/02\/09\/the-ultimate-programmers-keyboard"},"modified":"2006-02-09T07:51:13","modified_gmt":"2006-02-09T13:51:13","slug":"the-ultimate-programmers-keyboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ericgharrison.com\/?p=78","title":{"rendered":"The Ultimate Programmers Keyboard?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"msgcns!E4092A968B7C1A54!187\" class=\"bvMsg\">\n<div>Over the years, I&#8217;ve come up with a lot of ideas for products, both real world and software.\u00a0 Some of those would be:<\/div>\n<div>1) Ear muffs with built in headphones<\/div>\n<div>2) Surround sound headphones<\/div>\n<div>3) A keyboard that works well for programmers, including instant macros, a billion shortcuts and more.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>#1 was brought out by someone about\u00a06 months after I thought of the idea &#8211; this was in the late 80&#8217;s or early 90&#8217;s.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>#2 started appearing a while ago, again about 6 months after I first thought of it.\u00a0 I guess I need to learn to react quicker to these ideas (that, and build a factory so I have the resources handy when I have an idea)!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Now it looks like #3 has possibly happened, but by accident rather than by design.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Logitech has a product called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.logitech.com\/index.cfm\/products\/details\/US\/EN,CRID=2166,CONTENTID=10717\">G15 Gaming Keyboard<\/a>.\u00a0 I believe this may turn out to be a fantastic keyboard for programmers.\u00a0 You can read their information site for all the relevant details, but consider this &#8211;\u00a0it has a grand total of 54 programmable function keys!\u00a0 That&#8217;s 18 keys, with three &quot;banks&quot; of programming.\u00a0 Each key can be assigned to launch a program or run a macro.\u00a0 Macros can be programmed quickly just by pressing the MR (macro record) key and then the &quot;G&quot; key you want the keystrokes to be associated with.\u00a0 Program launching can be handled by using the configuration program.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The LCD display can display things like current media playing, a date \/ time \/ email status panel and\u00a0system performance (CPU and memory utilization).\u00a0 It can also be programmed using an included SDK.\u00a0 In my case I was intending to use it to display certain server status information, but I haven&#8217;t gotten around to coding that yet.\u00a0 However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.devexpress.com\">DevExpress<\/a> has come out with a plug in for their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.devexpress.com\/Products\/NET\/Refactor\/\">Refactor!
